Golf captain raises over £11,400 in tee-rific fundraising year

A golf club captain has raised more than £11,400 to support children harmed by crime in a series of fundraising events held throughout 2022.

Former National Crime Agency officer Roy Sinclair decided to raise money for Embrace Child Victims of Crime when he took over as Gentleman’s Captain of Hesketh Golf Club, Southport, Merseyside in March.

He chose the children’s charity because both he and his wife are both former police officers and National Crime Agency officers. Roy’s wife Jane Lawrenson worked in child protection for Lancashire Police and then the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre for around 20 years and saw first-hand the devastating effect crime has on young lives and had referred children to Embrace for support

Throughout the year they have organised a Shindig in the Shed that raised over £2,263, a Captain’s Charity Golf Day that raised around £6,000 and a Fashion and Pamper Night. Jane also asked for donations to Embrace for her 50th birthday instead of receiving presents raising over £400.

Roy said: “We’d like to thank everyone who has supported our events over the past year helping us to raise over £11,400 so far. We still have a couple of golf dinners that we are organising before I finish my year as captain in March so we are hoping to raise even more.

“We chose to support Embrace as Jane has used Embrace to support some of the young victims she has worked with and has seen the huge difference the charity makes. We know you are changing young lives and so for us there was only one choice.”

Embrace Child Victims of Crime Chief Executive Anne Campbell said: “We have been absolutely blown away by the enormous effort that Jane and Roy have made to make 2022 a really successful year of fundraising for Embrace. To raise over £11,000 already is a phenomenal amount and we are so grateful to them and all the other golfers from Hesketh Golf Club and other friends and family that have supported their events.

“This will enable us to continue in our aspirations to grow as a charity to reach as many families as we can whose lives have been torn apart by crime.

“We know that experiences of crime can have a devastating effect on the lives and life chances of young people which is why are so passionate in our drive to ensure as many children as possible receive the

right support at the right time to help them recover. On behalf of all the children we support, thank you Jane and Roy you are incredible!”
